Y Pengwern

I was on my way through Llan Ffestiniog to do some walking around the Hiraethog moors and you have to cut through this village to get to the narrow road that leads across the moors to Ysbyty Ifan. I came upon The Pengwern pub which I remembered was dilapidated the last time I came through. It was acquired by a community organisation a couple of years back and has undergone a measure of restoration.

It stocks the Purple Moose Brewery beers from Porthmadog and also some from the Conwy Brewery. Visitors are assured of a warm welcome and the prices are very reasonable.

As the project develops they will re-open the kitchen serving meals of locally sourced food in the restaurant and bar. Local specialities to include Welsh black beef, salt marsh lamb and the occasional wild brown trout – when in season of course!

Further plans include the reopening of the hotel with 7 en-suite bedrooms and there will also be a separate accommodation wing for activity groups with self-catering kitchen facilities and secure storage.
But for the moment it’s a great bar, with a garden, snacks, a view to die for and a fantastic welcome.

There are also stunning views of Snowdonia. The mountain below is Moelwyn Mawr.
